Tēnā koutou katoa,
The pou whenua at Tieke carries the history of Tieke to Tamahaki and Ngāti Hinekura. Its base had begun to decay, and over the past year we've been working to restore it so this taonga stands strong for the generations to come.
The pou is now back in place, solid and supported, and the wrapping has come down. A few finishing touches remain, but the heavy lifting is done.
More than the pou
Alongside the pou, the mahi has included drainage around the pou and the wharenui, and upgrades to the shelter, path and helipad.
Ngā mihi
Much of this work was given voluntarily, which meant the funding went much further than it otherwise would have. Our thanks go to:
- The whānau who gave their time and skills: Gordon Cribb, Paora Toho, Emilio Whitu and Harry Toho
- Our trustees, who gave their time voluntarily
- Uncle Paora and Uncle Shum, for the use of their jetboats to get materials and equipment to site
- Elite Engineering, for their sponsorship
- DTCE, for the structural engineering
- The Department of Conservation, for their support of the project
Ngā mihi maioha,
Ngāti Hinekura Manatōpū
